Menopause and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

What is the menopause?

The Menopause is experienced by a majority of women. It is being more widely recognised and acknowledged.  It is defined as cessation of menstrual cycle or permanently stopping of periods. It generally affects in the age group 45-52 years. However, some women may experience symptoms earlier or later.

How can you help me at DRG Health Clinic with menopause symptoms?

You will be seen by a specialist (GP with special interest in Women's Health) at DRG Health Clinic in Doncaster. you will have a consultation that can last up to 90 mins.  This will include a full history, examination, risk assessment for HRT, blood tests if needed and a discussion regarding treatment options. In majority of cases a prescription can be given at the same time.

Treatments are offered based on your symptoms, these include Use of HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), antidepressants, Electro Acupuncture, herbal medications, lifestyle advise.

What are the common symptoms of menopause? how can they affect me?

You may experience different type symptoms. Symptoms can vary from individual to individual. The symptoms include

​

Vasomotor Symptoms

Hot flushes, Night sweats, Poor sleep

​

Psychological symptoms

Mood swings, anxiety and depression, low energy, feeling tired, brain fog.

​

Genitourinary symptoms

Vagina dryness and vaginal burning and soreness. Urinary urgency and frequency, painful intercourse.

Others

Dry skin, joint pains, dry and brittle hair and headaches

Will I need to see you after the HRT or any other prescription?

Once started on HRT or any other medication you will need a regular follow up. It could vary depending on your needs generally between six weeks to three months.

How does HRT help?

HRT helps with menopausal symptoms, maintains bone density, helps cognitive function, sexual function in some cases even cardiovascular health.

Are there any risks associated with the use of HRT?

Yes, there is a small increase in 

1. cancer rates include breast, uterus and ovary, 

2. venous thromboembolism 

3. risk of stroke 

4. risk of cardiovascular event (on going debate)


 

I don’t want to use HRT, or I cannot tolerate HRT. Do you have any alternatives to HRT?

Yes, At DRG Health Clinic we offer Electroacupuncture/ Acupuncture and advise on plant-based treatments, general lifestyle advise and onward referral if needed.

What are the costs of menopause Consultation?

For Menopause consultation it costs £275.00 this includes initial consultation, HRT prescription and blood test (initial), first follow up appointment. Further blood tests and follow up if required will be extra.
